In seven weeks, more than 10,000  passionate music fans will  arrive in Charlestown, RI by plane, train, automobile, RV, foot, bicycle and boat  from 39 states and more than ten countries to attend one of the world’s premier  annual “roots” music festivals!

I ,and many people who call Washington County home, look forward to seeing the  Rhythm and Roots Family take residence on West Fest Field in Ninigret Park  every Labor day Week-end!

The music, the dancing, the food, the laughter, the jam sessions, the outfits, the campsites, the People!!!

This year, after many years of effort, the Wentworth’s are pleased to be able to offer an extra night of camping under  some of the least light polluted skies on the East Coast!  This dark canopy is the backdrop to a galaxy of brilliant stars!

Shawna asked if I would write a few words on some fun things to do  before, during or after  the festival. The following is the first suggesstion of many I will post leading up to the big event.

Ninigret Disc Golf Club is a links style 18 hole course. “The course traverses 25 acres with three different tee boxes,” said T. M. Dyer who is the architect, installer, and volunteer co-ordinator. “ “We broke ground in 1997 and holes 3 to 11 were completed by 1999.” Dyer  is a tireless and consequential volunteer that has helped transform  Ninigret Park from a  shuttered Naval Air Station to a prized Rhode Island open space.  Signature holes include #7 ”The Green Monster” and # 10 and #11 whose fairways feature old rose of sharons and rhododendrums he was gifted from his arborist days in Newport.

T. M and Joe Tarasevich have offered to present a clinic on the soccer fields that abut the tennis courts on August 30th- Thursday at 2pm- He has discs for 45 people. They will also offer a guided walk-about of the course after the clinic and thru-out the festival. Give T.M. a ring at 401-255-3747 to learn more about this opportunity or to reserve a spot to toss a few with our resident pro! No experience necessary.
