Steve Riley & The Mamou Playboys Bio

Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys have spent thirty-five years building a reputation as one of Cajun music’s finest ensembles. Their stunning performances of traditional French music from Southwest Louisiana have earned them international acclaim, including Grammy nominations for Trace of Time (2003), Bon Reve (2004), Live at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (2009), and Grand Isle (2011). From their very first show, they’ve brought an unparalleled combination of talent, tradition, and innovation to the stage.

Whether delivering a hot two-step, an a cappella ballad, or something that sounds like Howlin’ Wolf fell in love with a Creole girl, Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys offer the most authentic and exciting Cajun music you’ll find anywhere.

Steve Riley is a master of the Cajun accordion and one of the most respected musicians in the genre. His impeccable timing, powerful vocals, and charismatic stage presence have made him a standard-bearer for South Louisiana music. Beyond his work with the Mamou Playboys, Steve has recorded and performed with Eric Clapton, Robert Plant, Elvis Costello, Willie Nelson, and Paul Simon. He’s also a founding member of Lil Band o’ Gold and Band Courtbouillon, with whom he won a Grammy Award in 2013 alongside Wayne Toups and Wilson Savoy.

David Greely, born in Baton Rouge with Irish and Cajun roots, studied fiddle under Dewey Balfa and explored the Archive of Cajun and Creole music to unearth forgotten songs. He co-founded the Mamou Playboys with Steve Riley in 1988, bringing vintage country fiddle skills and a deep respect for tradition to their groundbreaking sound. After a ten-year hiatus as a solo artist, David is thrilled to be back with the band.

Sam Broussard is a force on guitar—acoustic, electric, and electric slide. His innovative playing pushes Cajun music into new territory while honoring its roots. A gifted songwriter, arranger, and tenor vocalist, Sam brings creativity and energy that can electrify any audience, whether on the dance floor or in a concert hall.

Burke Riley, the 14-year-old son of Steve Riley, is already making his mark on the Cajun music scene. He began playing drums at age three, moved to acoustic guitar, and picked up accordion at six. His natural talent and deep understanding of Cajun music’s groove make him a standout performer. Burke sings high harmony and holds down the Playboys’ signature sound with skill and heart beyond his years.
