Ruthie Foster Bio
Singer/songwriter Ruthie Foster mixes a wide palette of American song forms, from gospel and blues to jazz, folk and soul. Her accomplished career includes multiple Grammy nominations, Blues Music Awards wins, and collaborations with fellow luminaries like Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks. Born into a family of gospel singers, the Texas native began her singing career as a teenage solo in a gospel choir. While studying music and audio engineering in college she fronted a blues band, and then joined the Navy and sang in the naval band Pride. Ruthie released her first album in 1997, and over the course of her career has released eight more, including her latest, Healing Time, which garnered her fifth GRAMMY nomination. Her numerous wins at the Blues Music Awards include three for Best Female Vocalist, one for DVD of the Year for Live At Antone’s, and the 2023 award for Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year. She is a 2024 inductee to the Texas Songwriters Hall of Fame. Foster was named Best Female Vocalist at the 2013 Austin Music Awards, and in 2016 she was nominated for two Living Blues Awards and won the Koko Taylor Award for Best Traditional Female Blues Artist. Her list of honors also include a nomination from the Living Blues Awards for Best Live Performer.
