Big Bad Voodoo Daddy Bio

Get ready to swing this Labor Day Weekend, because Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is bringing their legendary high-energy show to the Rhythm and Roots Festival!

Approaching their 33-year anniversary in April 2026, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s remarkable arrival onto the music scene during the early nineties reminded the world that it was still cool to swing—even in the midst of the grunge era. Since forming in Ventura, California, the band has toured virtually nonstop, playing over 150 shows a year and selling over 2 million albums to date.

Co-founded by singer Scotty Morris and drummer Kurt Sodergren, the band was at the forefront of the swing revival, blending classic American jazz, swing, and dixieland with the spirit and energy of contemporary culture. Remarkably, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy still features its all-original core lineup: Scotty Morris (lead vocals and guitar), Kurt Sodergren (drums), Dirk Shumaker (double bass and vocals), Andy Rowley (baritone saxophone and vocals), Glen “The Kid” Marhevka (trumpet), Karl Hunter (saxophones and clarinet), and Joshua Levy (piano and arranger).

Their breakout appearance in the 1996 indie classic Swingers introduced them to a massive audience beyond their Los Angeles residency, leading to their music being featured in countless films and TV shows like Despicable Me, Friends, and Phineas & Ferb. They’ve performed live on Dancing With The Stars, The Tonight Show, the Super Bowl XXXIII Halftime Show, and have even played for three U.S. Presidents.

More than just a tribute act, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy introduces the uniquely American art form of horn-infused swing to younger generations while respectfully honoring the music’s rich legacy. After 11 records and over 3,000 live shows, the band shows absolutely no signs of slowing down. Don’t miss your chance to see them live at the Rhythm and Roots Festival!
