Mountain Grass Unit Bio
Hailing from Birmingham, Alabama, Mountain Grass Unit is a dynamic quartet pushing the boundaries of bluegrass with their innovative sound. Featuring Drury Anderson (mandolin, vocals), Luke Black (guitar, vocals), Josiah Nelson (fiddle, vocals), and Sam Wilson (bass, vocals), the band seamlessly blends traditional bluegrass with influences from country, jazz, funk, rock, and even metal.
Their musical story began with a shared passion for exploration, leading to a signature sound that honors bluegrass roots while daring to innovate. Their debut EP, Runnin’ From Trouble (2024), showcases their original compositions alongside bold reinterpretations, influenced by icons like Tony Rice and Billy Strings. Produced by Mike Harris (Old Crow Medicine Show) and recorded at Nashville’s Hartland Studios, the EP captures both their creative spirit and the electrifying energy of their live performances.
With standout tracks like the introspective “Hey Mama,” the groove-driven “Cicada Song,” and the high-energy “Smugglin’,” Mountain Grass Unit displays a remarkable range of styles. Their 2024 performances at Renewal, DelFest, and WinterWondergrass put them on the map, introducing their genre-defying music to wider audiences and cementing their place as rising stars in the bluegrass scene.
Poised for an exciting future, Mountain Grass Unit is gearing up for extensive touring, festival appearances, and new releases. Every performance is a unique chapter, inviting listeners to join them on their captivating musical journey.
