Wondering what to do in Charlestown before the music starts?
With the Rhythm & Roots approaching over Labor Day weekend, festival fans are mapping out their plans for which performers to see and how to spend their time before the musicians begin playing every day at 1 p.m.
If you’re camping at Ninigret Park, the site of the festival, take advantage of the freshwater pond and public beach, enjoy the four miles of hiking trails in the Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge and enjoy its natural beauty. If you prefer kayaking, Ninigret Pond is largest salt pond in Rhode Island. Rent a kayak and paddleboard for as long as you’d like. Fishing is allowed too, with a fishing license of course. Across Route 1 from Ninigret Park is the Kettle Pond Visitors Center, where festival-goers can view exhibits of Rhode Island wildlife and hike along many of the nature trails.
If you’re looking to go to the beach, head down to Charlestown Town Beach, East Beach, Blue Shutters Beach, or the Charlestown Breachway. But make sure you arrive early to snag a parking spot, and money to pay for parking.
If you’re looking for something unique, head to the Fantastic Umbrella Factory located on scenic Route 1A. The shop describes itself as a “19th century farmyard shopper’s paradise and international bazaar.” Check out the gift shops, galleries, boutiques and gardens. Along the way, you may find yourself face to face with emus, goats and other farm animals. Keep walking and you’ll enter an enthralling bamboo forest. Whether you want to shop or just stroll around, the Fantastic Umbrella Factory has something for everyone and anyone no matter how old or young they are.
You never thought there would be this much to do in Charlestown, did you? We look forward to seeing you Labor Day weekend!
