Rhythm & Roots 2011 promises to be a great weekend all the way around — from the stellar music on the festival’s many stages to the spectacular weather that is forecasted!

Today is Monday (Aug 29) and our site crew is at Ninigret Park setting everything up. Great news! Irene dropped by for just a short time and left without creating any havoc! And it looks like the skies will be blue right on through the week.

So, start packing! Gates open this Friday, Sept 2. Camping opens at 9am and Festival gates open at 4pm. Music begins at 5 with Swamp Cabbage on the Main Stage and the Red Stick Ramblers at the Dance Pavilion. Click to see each day’s schedule. You won’t want to miss a beat.

Need to tune up your dancing skills? R&R offers free dance lessons Saturday and Sunday, so dust off the dancin’ shoes and come on down!

Rhythm & Roots co-producer Chuck just turned the big 6-0! And he’s celebrating by giving $15 worth of “Chuck’s Bucks” for tickets sold from July 4 through July 11. If you buy your tickets by July 11th, you’ll have your bucks waiting for you at the gate at “Will Call” when you arrive—and they’ll be good at our food and drink booths as well as at our very cool Tee Shirt booth.

When some of us turn 60, we’ll be hiding under a rock, but not Chuck! He’s a proud Yankee Doodle Dandy (born on the 4th of July) and wants to share his birthday with you. So, please take advantage of this offering from the “old man.” Chuck’s Bucks are available with the purchase of tickets all this week: July 4-11. And we’ll see YOU at Rhythm & Roots!

Rhythm & Roots is the place to discover new music

One thing I always like about Rhythm & Roots is that I discover new music in addition to the great headliners. Here’s one band you’ll want to check out: Chicago based Sarah & the Tall Boys. Led by Providence native Sarah Potenza, the band does a mix of blues and Americana. Sarah’s voice will knock you out….I’d call it a cross between Janis Joplin and Susan Tedeschi. Our Cajun Academy for Kids

R&R Cajun Academy for Kids is a fun music instruction program held during Rhythm & Roots Festival for young students from 8-17 years of age. Kids learn to play, sing and perform traditional Cajun music. Classes are offered in traditional Cajun fiddle, guitar and accordion, bass and mandolin. The academy is directed by renowned fiddle teacher, Michelle Kaminsky, and the teachers include Michelle Kaminsky, Chris Ash, Rachel Panitch, and Andy Stewart (fiddle); Alan Bradbury (accordion); Martin Grosswendt, Maggie Moniz and Mary Jo Slattery (guitar); Michael Pattavina (mandolin), Mark Wholley, (upright bass), with backup by Jack Ezikovish on drums. The program culminates in a Dance Stage performance for an enthusiastic crowd of dancers on Sunday afternoon as “Les Jeunes Cajuns” (the students and their instructors) play and sing tunes they have learned during the weekend.
